Campbell-based cloud storage company Panzura this week announced it had closed a $32 million round of funding led by Matrix Partners, with participation from Meritech Capital Partners, Opus Capital, Chevron and Western Digital. The 8-year-old company has raised an estimated $90 million to date.

Fremont Chip Designer Quantenna Communications IPO Plans to Raise $100M

Wireless chip designer Quantenna Communications hopes to join the new wave of Silicon Valley IPOs, revealing plans on Thursday to raise $100 million in an offering.

The Fremont company has raised more than $160 million from investors who include Sequoia Capital, DAG Ventures, Centerview Capital, Venrock and Southern Cross Capital.

Quantenna is the chip supplier to Mimosa.

Carried Interest – How it is Treated Matters!

IMHO whether it is Trump or corrupt Hillary, if either candidate as president succeeds to get Congress to overturn the current treatment of carried interest, it will DEFINITELY impact Silicon Valley, tech, hiring, and overall US competitiveness. I had worked successfully in Silicon Valley for 2 decades before I even understood how carrier interest works. But the tax treatment of carried interest matters!

The US is still heads and shoulders above the rest of the world in tech and innovation.

Penalizing those in the ecosystem that take the big risks associated with such success would definitely be counterproductive

Whatever you tax heavily will be discouraged. Chief Justice John Marshall got it right when he famously wrote "the power to tax involves the power to destroy"

The topic of carried interest has come up in this year's US presidential election. For those unfamiliar, this description from a recent Bloomberg article (see The Blurb for link to full article) describes the debate.

The venture community is torn on the topic, with some VCs saying the current tax treatment should be changed while others argue that it's correct. But most don't say that the treatment of carried interest would impact their choice of vocation.

Keith Rabois (@rabois) of Khosla Ventures (a great follow on Twitter btw) isn't having it. He has said pretty emphatically that he's out of the VC game if carried interest goes away.

For the other VCs on the newsletter, are you getting out of VC if carried interest goes away?

No. I like the current rule but wouldn't stop

The Next Silicon Valley is Probably Going to be….Silicon Valley

With the exception of New York, major venture hubs have shown little progress in dethroning Silicon Valley as the place for tech VC. Massachusetts and Texas are losing ground while everyone else is flat.

Silicon Valley has long dominated the spotlight for promoting and financing the growth of emerging tech companies. And so when you’re the 800 lb gorilla in an area, there will be others who aspire to knock you off of your perch. And so we see lots of breathless proclamations from other cities and regions that they are the “next Silicon Valley”. Chicago threw its hats in the ring during Groupon-mania but it is clearly not the next Silicon Valley as the data shows. And a quick Googling of the term “the next Silicon Valley” shows Seattle, Los Angeles, Bangalore, Tel Aviv and even the Brooklyn tech triangle (yes – really) have all thrown their hat into the ring thinking they could be contenders.

People Don't Leave Companies -- They Leave Leaders!

I have employed thousands of people over the years. And every time one resigned, a little part of me died. (Okay, I lie. I have actually danced a celebratory jig around my desk on the odd occasion, but that's another post!)

Mostly, my natural reaction has always been a human one I suppose. "What possible reason would they have to do that?" or, "What's wrong with them?" or even, "She must be leaving for money. The fool!"

Silicon Valley is the Only Relevant Market for Venture Capital

“New York is an irrelevant market for us as a venture capital firm.”

At a recent dinner in NY hosted by our friends at Lowenstein Sandler, a Silicon Valley-based VC made this comment to kick off our dinner conversation. While the comment was made at least partially to stir the pot, the sentiment behind it was real.  From his perspective, allocating his own and his firm’s time to NY or any market outside of Silicon Valley was a waste because in his view, the best dealflow is in Silicon Valley and so it stands to follow that the biggest exits will come from the Valley as well. (NY’s first VC-backed $1 billion exit clearly wasn’t enough to impress him.)

After hearing the comment, we wondered if this was more VC anecdote dressed up as data (see here, here and here for examples of those) or whether there was some truth to this.

VMware buying Virsto Software

A former Netsoft client was acquired today:

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — Cloud software company VMware Inc. said Monday that it is acquiring Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Virsto Software for an undisclosed price.

The deal will help VMware speed up its development of storage technologies. Virsto makes software to help customers with storage performance and utilization in virtual environments. Customers turn to these software companies for help managing the complexity and cost of storage and other computing tasks.

VMware, based in Palo Alto, Calif., said the acquisition is scheduled to close in the first quarter.

Many tech entrepreneurs dream of taking their companies public, but they may want to think twice.

While public offerings raise cash, new research suggests that IPOs can also result in stunted innovation at technology firms.

In general, post-IPO companies create inventions that are less ambitious and valuable than do firms that remain private, found Shai Bernstein, an assistant finance professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He analyzed patent data from 1,500 U.S. technology firms that either went public, or intended to go public but called off those plans, between 1985 and 2003. In all, he examined nearly 40,000 patents awarded to the companies both before and after their intended IPO date. The two groups were similar in size, age and research spending.

Silicon Valley remains the world’s top environment for startups, according to the Startup Genome 2012 "Startup Ecosystem Report," which uses an index based on data from more than 50,000 startups around the world that are using the Startup Genome’s Startup Compass, an automated analyst in the cloud that helps businesses make decisions through benchmarks and actionable recommendations.
